January 25 & 26

With music as enchanting and lavishly colorful as the title character, The Firebird is the perfect way to celebrate the new year.

This suite comes from the 1910 ballet that launched Stravinsky’s international career. Opening the program is Sibelius’ most-famous composition, Finlandia, evoking the struggles of his native homeland with equal parts ominousness, pride, and festivity. Brahms’ Variations on a Theme by Haydn is one of the famed Romantic composer’s most popular works. Argentinian conductor Carlos Vieu brings Sonia Possetti’s spirited Bullanguera from his homeland to complete this program.

March 8 & 9

March “comes in like a lion,” and this tour-de-force program proves it.

One of Beethoven’s most celebrated works, and in fact, the composer’s personal favorite of his compositions, the Eroica symphony explores what it means to be human.

Richard Strauss’ tone poem depicts the dying thoughts of an artist as he recounts the various stages of his life, all while awaiting the ultimate transformation.

And we mark the first Symphony San Jose performance of a work by Arvo Pärt, the most performed contemporary composer in the world (beating out John Williams, John Adams, Thomas Adès, and Philip Glass).

March 29 & 30

A film’s score conveys mood, pace, and tension. It sets the scene and is one of the most critical aspects of storytelling on screen.

Since 1939, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has been awarding the Oscar for Best Score.

Join us as we celebrate those films and film composers who took home the coveted trophy for capturing the perfect emotion that brought the film to life.

May 10 & 11

Take the ultimate trip through our solar system and experience the Symphony like never before.

Don’t miss the breathtaking multimedia event featuring Gustav Holst’s epic celestial masterpiece with awe-inspiring NASA images and footage projected onto a giant screen on stage.

This space odyssey begins with Jessie Montgomery’s Starburst and concludes with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s final symphony, nicknamed “Jupiter” and long considered by critics to be among the greatest symphonies in classical music.

June 7 & 8

Grab your passport and join us for our season’s grand finale in Spain. Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, by far his best-known work, cemented his reputation as one of Spain’s most significant composers.

We’ll also view the Iberian Peninsula through the lens of two visiting composers, Ravel (France) and Rimsky-Korsakov (Russian), and hear how each portrayed Spanish music through their distinct writing styles.
